Lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors

Position Objectives:

Under immediate supervision, monitors activities in the water, pool decks, and ancillary areas of aquatics facilities to ensure the safety of patrons; learns, explains, and enforces safe swimming programs and pool policies, regulations, and rules. Performs rescues and administers first aid, CPR, and AED as needed; and performs related work as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Enforces all aquatic facility policies, procedures, and rules.
• Recognizes and responds effectively to emergencies.
• Participates in in-service training.
• Completes records and reports.
• Takes daily attendance fees and admits patrons into facility.
• Cleans facility and responsible for general maintenance.
• Assists in bathhouse during rotation.
• Records hours worked daily on timesheet.
• Gives swimming lessons to young children.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Must be at least 15 years of age.

• American Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED
• Ability to act in a decisive manner using good judgment.                 
• Be able to assess problems, situations, and anticipate needs and evaluate alternatives.
• Ability to maintain pool in a safe manner.                                                                                                                              
• Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
• Public Relations skills and ability to work as a team.
