Board split, Pledge policy not changed

Flying US FlagThe DGF School Board failed to change the shool policy mandating students stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. The six members of the seven member board split evenly on the recommendation to ammend the schools handbook and allow students to choose to sit or stand during the Pledge.

The missing member Tracy Tollefson will most likely be the deciding vote when the policy change comes back onto the agenda in June. Read more

DGF 8th Grader wins state essay

Sherrif Bill Berquist, Dilworth investigator Hunter Rawson and Police Chief Dave Miller were all looking for the same 8th grader at DGF on Thursday… Nick Green. The three Clay County law enforcement officials found their man thanks to the assistance of Principal Colleen Houglum around 12:30 PM.

Rebels win on the diamonds

Michael Vosburg / Forum Photo Editor Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton’s Taylor Yliniemi bats against Ada-Borup on Tuesday in Dilworth. The Rebels defeated the Cougars 7-4, with Paul Ness getting the victory for D-G-F. The DGF baseball team was able to defeat Ada-Borup Tuesday, despite seven defensive errors. Pitcher Paul Ness allowed just three hits and five strike outs to collect his third win of the season. Brandon Mortenson had two RBI’s and scored another in the win over Ada-Borup. Mortenson went 2 for 4 and had a stolen base as well.

DGF Girls Softball splits double header

The DGF girls softball team split the double header in Warroad on Saturday. The Rebels lost the first game 17-5 to Warroad. Becky Swenson hit her fourth home run of the year in that game, but the Rebels still fell short of runs.

The Rebels won the second game with an 8-7 victory over Roseau. Against Roseau, the Rebels had three players each with two hits. The Rebels improved their record to 11-5.

DGF sweeps LPA on the diamond

baseballDGF was led by Riley Nelson who went 4-for-6 with three doubles in a double header against Lake Park-Audubon.

The Rebels won the first game 15-5 with Nelson hitting in three RBI’s.

DGF shut out the Raiders 5-0 the second game with the help of pitcher Luke Gable six strike outs of Raider hitters. Gable only gave up two hits in the victory.

DGF reconsidering pledge policy

Flying US FlagAccording to news reports, DGF schools are considering changing the phrase in the student handbook requiring all students to stand during the pledge. The policy “may need to be modified to address the protection of the individual form of expression” according to principal Colleen Houglum.

The policy sparked the in school suspension of four students at the Junior High School and prompted a letter from the MN ACLU. On Thursday three students were given in school suspension when Houglum observed the three students sitting during the Pledge of Allegiance. A fourth student then remained sitting during the pledge to protest the policy and was given the same in school suspension. The students mother then requested the son be sent home.

DGF Junior High-ElementaryThree eighth-graders at Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Junior High spent Thursday in in-school suspension for sitting down during the pledge of allegiance.

Brandt Dahl said his homeroom teacher had never before told the class that the school handbook required students to stand up during the pledge.

Former DGF teacher named 2008 Teacher of the Year

Carleen Gulstad is a language arts teacher at Hopkins North Junior High. She was named 2008 teacher of the year by Education Minnesota, the state\Former DGF teacher Carleen Gulstad has been named the 2008 Teacher of the Year by the state’s teachers union, Education Minnesota.

Gulstad graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead and began teaching in Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton school district in 1994. She has been teaching at Hopkins North Junior High since 1999.

Gulstad draws inspiration from her students as well as her older brother Cedric. She credits her successful teaching career to her brother who took his own life more then 20 years ago.
