Archies-Bargins Comes Tumbling Down
April 22, 2008
Commuters along Highway 10 will notice more open space on the South side next to the Pizza Ranch. After 37 years, the buildings that once housed several different businesses are being demolished.
Archie’s Place was opened in 1971 and is housed on over 8 acres on the corner of 34th street in Moorhead and Highway 10 Dilworth. Archie’s closed in 1991 and later that same year a new store was opened with a new name, Bargains.
The property was bought in 2006 by Christianson Holdings who plan to market the site as a commercial strip mall.
The city of Dilworth is working with the developer and will assist with the demolition of the buildings after receiving a $420,000 state redevelopment grant recently. The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development grant will be used to assist with the costs of removing hazardous waste and building demolition according to Dilworth City Planner Stan Thurlow.
Thurlow applied for a $500,000 grant and was recently notified that the city had received $420,000.
“We’re very excited. We’ve always kind of considered this our gateway. It’s sort of been a landmark in Dilworth but it’s sort of gone into disrepair” said Thurlow.
Current plans designate the majority of the site for retail, but the developers have noted that it is also possible for the site to be a mix of offices and retail. Christianson Holdings has been involved with several area developments including the Aurora Medical Park in Fargo, Eagle Run in West Fargo and Osgood Development in Fargo.
Got something to say?
